Company energy audit (EED)

According to the new energy efficiency act of 20th May 2016, all large companies are obligated to carry out an energy audit. The energy audit of a company is a procedure aimed at obtaining information on the possibility to reduce energy consumption, with reference to all areas of electrical power engineering in such a company.

The scope of EED

According to the Energy Efficiency Act (Journal of Laws of 2016, item 831), under which the provisions of the Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency have been implemented, all large companies in Poland are obliged to carry out a corporate energy audit, or otherwise the penalty of up to 5% of the value of company's revenues earned in the year preceding the creation of an obligation might be imposed on them.

The scope of the audit offered by DB Energy complies with the requirements of both the Directive and the Energy Efficiency Act. The audit includes:

  • description and assessment of the current condition of the equipment / facilities which consume energy in the area of electricity, heat and cold, district heating and cooling networks, electricity networks, technological processes and transport,
  • development of the energy balance of an enterprise on the basis of obtained data and complementary measurements; determination of energy efficiency indices,
  • verification of the potential for energy efficiency improvement in all the areas mentioned above,
  • measurements of installations and equipment, selected by a group of engineers, aimed at evaluation of the potential for savings (depending on needs, measurements are made in the area of electricity, air and water flows, thermal imaging, temperatures, etc.),
  • development of the energy efficiency improvement policy to be applied in an enterprise within next 4 years.

The auditor is prepared to carry out random measurements of operating power installations, if necessary for the proper performance of the service.

Who is obligated to carry out the audit?

According to the definition available on the website of the Energy Regulatory Authority, pursuant to the Freedom of Business Activity Act of 2 July 2004 (Journal of Laws of 2015, item 584, as amended), a large enterprise is an enterprise which in the last two financial years:

  • annually, has employed at least 250 employees on average or
  • has reached the annual net turnover from sales of goods, services and financial operations which exceeds the PLN equivalent of EUR 50 million, and the total assets of its balance sheet drawn up at the end of one of those financial years exceeded the PLN equivalent of EUR 43 million. (See: Information of the President of the Energy Regulatory Authority No. 46/2016).

The Energy Audit of an Enterprise (EED) is followed by the Energy Efficiency Audit (AEE) of a project aimed at energy efficiency improvement (PSPEE), which has been selected for implementation in the EED audit. AEE is the basis for obtaining the White Certificate (WC). As a result of the AEE audit, a complete design concept for an energy-efficient investment is created-  DBE is further able to prepare the financing offer in line with Energy Performance Contracts (EPC). This investment model is often called the ESCO (Energy Saving Company), since an energy-saving investment is implemented and financed by a third party, usually a specialized auditing firm (ESCO- Energy Service Company).
